I have been asked, by a number of people, to go public with my view on gun control as many of my fellow Sheriffs across the nation have done. My view is very simple and my personal opinion is the same as my official position.
As you heard me state many times during the campaign, I will defend and protect all of the peoples' rights granted by the Constitution of the United States and of the State of Texas. This includes the 2nd Amendment which is within our "Bill of Rights".
On November 6, 2012 the people of Wood County elected me as their "Constitutional Sheriff" and entrusted me with protecting their lives and property as well as defending all of the rights to which they are entitled. This is a trust that I am honored to have and will not violate. On January 1, 2013 I took a solemn oath before God, not only once but on two occasions that day, to enforce the Law and to protect the Constitution. I have sworn to this oath before as a Soldier, a Peace Officer, and a Federal Agent and I hold it as a sacred part of my being.
I am very proud to be the Sheriff of Wood County and its Chief Law Enforcement Officer. As long as I am in this office I, and my trusted deputies, will not enforce or permit to be enforced any "unconstitutional" regulations or executive orders against our citizens within the borders of Wood County Texas.
I personally do not think that "they", whomever they may be, are coming for our guns but in the event that "they" do, in violation of, and absent of any constitutional change in, the 2nd Amendment, they will have to take my gun before they get yours. Having said that I want it understood that I will arrest and jail any person that uses a firearm illegally in Wood County, no matter how minor, because actions of this nature jeopardize all our citizen's rights to own firearms by providing fuel to those that endeavor to restrict that right. In order to preserve our rights we must be responsible.
As always I ask for your continued support in enabling my office to protect you, your family and your property.
