Every year, Wood County Sheriff’s Office teams up with Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Sabine River Authority to host a free fishing tournament with the idea of getting kids “hooked on fishing, not on drugs”. The tournament not only promotes fishing as a sport but to also gives children who are less fortunate an opportunity to become involved. This also teaches healthy hobbies, builds confidence in our youth and promotes good sportsmanship. This tournament is always held the first weekend in June at the Sabine River Authority office from 8:00 a.m. to noon.
Items that are provided to families who attend include but are not limited to a free rod and reel, free t-shirt, food and drinks. The catch and release tournament provides the child a chance to win a trophy as well as a “traveling trophy” for the child who catches the biggest fish of the day. The day is concluded with a drawing for a chance to win one of 16 bicycles and helmet.
